Position Summary San Diego State University – Imperial Valley Campus is seeking an experienced Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic to provide expert maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems. The role supports campus operations through high‑quality technical service.

Perform service, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems and components.

Diagnose issues and ensure optimal system performance.

Conduct preventive maintenance to support safety and system longevity.

Respond to emergencies to protect campus safety and operations.

Track time and materials and complete tasks on schedule.

Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean, hazard‑free work environment.

Position Information

Full‑time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.

Non‑exempt under FLSA and eligible for overtime.

Standard work hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m., with occasional variation.

Primary work location: Brawley campus; travel to Calexico campus as needed.

Education and Experience Knowledge : Thorough understanding of refrigeration and air‑conditioning theory, materials, and repair techniques; knowledge of electrical, plumbing, thermodynamics, and energy management systems.

Abilities : Skilled in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC/R diagnostics; ability to prioritize work orders and perform complex multi‑zone and refrigeration system repairs with judgment and discretion.

Experience : Minimum of five (5) years of full‑time, journey‑level HVAC/R experience, including installation, maintenance, and repair of air‑conditioning systems of varying capacities in multi‑story buildings. Journeyman level or completion of an approved refrigeration or HVAC/R apprenticeship program required.

Key Qualifications

Ability to recognize and report unsafe conditions immediately.

Diagnose and repair major malfunctions in multi‑zone air‑conditioning systems.

Diagnose and repair full range of refrigeration equipment.

Associate’s degree and/or NATE certification preferred.

Experience with central plant systems, chilled‑water plants, and cooling towers.

Familiarity with thermal energy storage (TES) system control logic.

Knowledge of hydronic distribution, pumps, and control valves.

Extensive knowledge of building automation systems (BAS/DDC).

Licenses/Certifications Required

Valid California Driver’s License.

Valid certification in refrigerant handling per EPA regulations.
