This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

Doctor of medicine (MD) or Doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) from a VA-approved institution.

Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.

For residency applicants: acceptance into an ACGME or AOA accredited residency program, or completion of a non-U.S. residency followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not independent practitioners.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Must pass a pre‑employment physical in accordance with VA Directive 5019.

Duties

The radiologist provides image interpretation, image‑guided procedures, and patient care services within diagnostic radiology.

Contributes to quality assurance and performance improvement, oversees technical quality, and educates staff and trainees.

Provides expertise and support in diagnostic radiology and patient care, including oversight of radiation safety, infection control, and medication administration relevant to imaging.

Reviews examination requests for appropriateness and prescribes exam protocols.

Provides clinical oversight of imaging examinations and ensures timely, accurate reports.

Consults with providers on exam selection, review of results, and supports imaging service operations.

Participates in multidisciplinary conferences such as tumor boards.

Interacts with patients, obtains history, performs exams within scope, provides education, obtains consent, and documents in CPRS.

Coordinates patient care with clinical providers, ensuring effective, patient‑centered outcomes.

Engages in medical staff functions, committee assignments, and ensures compliance with VA regulations.

Supports academic affiliations and teaching programs involving technologists, assistants, students, and residents.
