Crisis Line Counselor-Remote (for Texas residents only) The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD

("The HARRIS CENTER") seeks a Crisis Line Counselor to join our team, providing immediate intervention and support to individuals in crisis 24/7/365. The role requires creating a safe, nonjudgmental space, de‑escalating, offering coping strategies, and connecting callers to appropriate care.

Your Role In Action

Be ready and available to take calls during an assigned shift.

Build connection and rapport, demonstrating empathy.

Employ crisis intervention models and active listening skills.

Assess calls accurately using the Crisis Line Comprehensive Framework tool.

Collaborate with callers to explore options and provide guidance.

Explain and offer resources and referrals based on the call type.

Handle calls and follow‑up throughout the shift.

Complete thorough documentation during and after calls.

Make timely referrals as needed.

Education

Bachelor’s degree.

Experience

Customer service experience, preferably phone related.

Successfully complete 200+ hours of training covering telephonic customer service, crisis intervention theory, listening skills, call management, mental health, intellectual/developmental disability issues, suicide and homicide risk assessments, and community resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Critical thinking and problem solving.

Typing speed of at least 40 wpm.

Ability to navigate multiple computer systems simultaneously.

Remote Qualifications

Reliable high‑speed internet with a direct ethernet connection.

Private, quiet space resembling an office environment, free of household distractions.

No family or childcare during work hours.
