The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is looking for a Body & Fender Repairer. This position works in the Body and Fender Repair Shop located in Pearl City, performing journey-level work in body and frame alignment, repairing, welding, and painting of motorized construction equipment, trucks, cars, and trailers.

What You'll Do

Remove dents on body and fenders of trucks, cars, equipment, and trailers with appropriate tools.

Repair damaged body, fenders, bumpers, floors, etc. with oxyacetylene, MIG, heli‑arc, arc welding equipment, etc.

Repair or replace various body components.

Remove rust, grease, wax and tar; if rust is beyond repair, cut off the damaged portions with a cutting torch and weld new metal patches.

Prepare surfaces to accept body filler and primer.

Modify truck and equipment bodies to accommodate specialized equipment.

Perform skilled painting work and apply primers, lacquer, enamel, polyurethane, and other protective coatings with a spray gun.

Work Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Special Work Requirements

No overhead permanent cranes are available; precision lifts are nearly impossible.

Some repairs must be done in open work areas subject to inclement weather.

Frequently work under or with vehicle components that can cause serious injury when dismantling or assembling.

Required to lift heavy loads or carry trucks, cars, construction equipment, trailers, fenders, bumpers, hoods, body panels, doors, trailer hitches, landing wheels, bracings, etc.

Perform high‑bore, low‑overhead confined‑space work inside fender wells, utility bodies, compressor housing compartments.

Due to limited hoists, squatting, crouching, kneeling, and bending are required.

Frequent back stretching, bending over fenders and hoods, etc., are necessary.

Constant exposure to body fillers, cleaning fluids, sanding and grinding dust, welding and paint fumes, high decibel noise, and heat.

Minor cuts, scratches, burns, and bruises are common and expected.

Experience Requirement Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position.

Knowledge of practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in body and fender repair work.

Knowledge of techniques for applying paints, lacquers, and enamels to motorized equipment.

Knowledge of sheet metal tools and their uses in body and fender repair and fabrication.

Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to operate oxyacetylene and arc welding equipment, mix paints and match colors, perform spray and brush painting, and handle weights and loads.
