Fairview is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician for our first shift at M Health Fairview Clinics & Surgery Center in Minneapolis. Shift times are typically 7:00am-3:30pm with infrequent/optional coverage of the 5:00am shift once fully trained. There is a weekend rotation of every fourth weekend. The weekend rotation alternates between working both a Saturday and Sunday one instance and working Saturday with Sunday on‑call for the next. There are also rotating holiday assignments of 0-1 holidays per year. Weekend/holiday hours are 6:00am-2:30pm.
Job Overview The Clinics and Surgery Center Laboratory is a fast‑paced, high‑complexity laboratory serving a unique and diverse patient population. Our team of over 45 staff members takes pride in delivering exceptional care to patients and accurate, quick results to clinicians. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) provides quality, proficient, and professional laboratory services within an integrated healthcare environment. The MLT performs waived, moderate, or high‑complexity testing per SOP, correlates data‑based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions that affect results, and performs quality control procedures within established parameters. The MLT may also be involved in specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, ensuring efficient workflow, and scheduling tests and providing results as appropriate. The MLT works independently under general supervision.
Responsibilities
Follow established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work
Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique following established SOP
Properly verify patient identity
Assess integrity of all specimens for testing
Verify correct identification of specimens before testing
Determine priority of specimen testing and procurement
Perform a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing
Perform waived, moderate, or high‑complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88 according to SOP in an efficient, cost‑effective manner, including areas such as Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, and EKG
Operate laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to procedure
Perform and document maintenance procedures, maintain adequate supplies
Recognize problems and take appropriate measures to resolve them
Seek assistance appropriately for problems or unusual situations; consult with supervisor if unable to resolve issues
Initiate proper safety or emergency responses
Evaluate testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention
Determine if test results fall within normal parameters and reporting protocols; recognize age‑specific reference ranges
Correlate data based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other conditions affecting test results
Take appropriate action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results
Directly communicate abnormal and critical results to caregiver
Obtain information from caregivers to resolve reasons for incongruent results
Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs
Document deviations and actions taken; document reagent, test kit and calibrator checks; recognize and communicate values and trends that exceed QC thresholds; take action to resolve issues and consult supervisor as needed
Participate in the lab performance improvement program by collecting data, reviewing results, and implementing action‑step recommendations
Collaborate with laboratory customers to promote customer satisfaction
Demonstrate competency and compliance with all regulatory agency policies
Orient and mentor new employees and students: orient individuals in routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation, and information systems; check work prior to release; complete training checklists and evaluations as appropriate; report progress and problems to supervisor/manager
Required Qualifications
Associate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field, including a related lab practicum, or equivalent routes to qualify as high‑complexity testing personnel as specified in CLIA ’88
Associate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided
Associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours of academic credit from an accredited college/university with 6 semester hours in biology and 6 semester hours in chemistry
Completion of a 50‑week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and an associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours of academic credit from an accredited college/university with 6 semester hours in biology and 6 semester hours in chemistry
Applicant should possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification
ASCP, ASCPi, AMT, or AAB – MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) within 1 Year
