Summary The
Senior Indirect Tax Accountant
services as the lead person for the preparation of timely and accurate tax/licensing requirements.
S/he also works with internal/external customers for reporting, auditing, and training.
The
Senior Indirect Tax Accountant
manages, prioritizes, and performs these responsibilities to ensure deadlines are met.
Roles and Responsibilities
Oversees and ensures accurate, complete, and timely filings including sales/use, GST/PST/VAT, fuel, gross receipts, property and other indirect taxes
Evaluates taxability and determines relevant jurisdictions for new job setup and approval
Coordinates with Contractor Compliance and Licensing Specialist to obtain required licensing and registration for new jobs
Maintains and provides sales/use tax rate document
Researches taxability of transactions and reporting requirements
Reviews GL activity monthly to accrue use tax, request tax credits and ensure proper tax procedure is followed
Creates adjusting journal entries for accruals and corrections, submits tax credits to AP, prepares refund requests, reconciles sales and use tax liability accounts
Leads indirect tax audits and responds to indirect tax notices
Seeks automation opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy of processes within the organization
Provides tax reporting to internal departments needed for billings or close‑out processes
Supports income tax compliance by compiling and summarizing apportionment data
Tracks and pays personal and real property tax liabilities
Assists corporate tax manager with updating tax depreciation schedules
Directs daily activities of Indirect Tax Accountant
Provides guidance and training to Indirect Tax Accountant
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in management, accounting, finance, or a related field and 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Construction accounting experience required
Foreign tax preparation preferred
Proficient with Excel, Word, Adobe, and Outlook
High level of confidentiality
Limited travel required
Competencies
Ability to effectively communicate orally or in writing within and outside the organization in an easy‑to‑follow manner
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
Ability to effectively present tax information and respond to questions from all levels of the organization
Ability to perform basic mathematical functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations
Ability to apply mathematical knowledge to create complex formulas in Excel
Ability to collaborate with internal and external parties
Ability to maintain effective relationships with regulatory authorities, senior management, project management, and internal customers
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, with a high level of professionalism, reliability and integrity
Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and manage time effectively
Ability to respond to requests in a timely manner, typically same day and no longer than 24 hours
Detail oriented
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines
Ability to interpret complex legal documents, government instructions and regulations to apply concepts to real world situations
Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills
