Location: Austin, TX (Stassney HQ – Main 6230 East Stassney Lane, Austin 78744)
Position Information: TxDOT’s Design Division is seeking an Engineering Assistant in the Traffic in Highway Safety and Operations Group, Project Delivery Section. This role performs traffic engineering work and provides technical assistance, guidance documentation, training, and support to districts and other division staff.
Salary Range:
B20
$65,000 – $72,000 B21
$68,000 – $78,000 B22
$70,000 – $84,000
Pay Basis: Yearly FLSA Status: Nonexempt Shift: Day, 40 Hours a Week, 10% Travel
Work Location: Onsite – Stassney HQ – Main Flexibility: None

Position Description – Responsibilities The candidate will:
Perform traffic engineering work, including capacity analysis, traffic simulation, safety modeling, and preliminary design.
Support preliminary through final project design and review of highway & intersection capacity analysis.
Generate technical assistance, guidance documentation, and training for districts and division staff.
Collaborate with Design Support, Landscape (Pedestrian and Mobility) and other groups.
Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, policies, standards, and guidelines.
Contact governmental officials and private entities as required.
Work under the supervision of a team lead.
All Engineering Assistants must participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) and sign a program agreement.
Engineering Assistant I – Core Responsibilities
Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams.
Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.
Collect engineering data at project sites.
Participate in the EACDP with job rotation, training, and continuing education.
Perform engineering calculations, drafting, and design work.
Conduct traffic analysis and data collection.
Use automated design programs and computer‑assisted design/engineering systems.
Complete other job responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Assistant II – Additional Responsibilities
All responsibilities of Assistant I.
Perform research and problem‑solving of engineering‑related problems.
Engineering Assistant III – Additional Responsibilities
All responsibilities of Assistant II.
Review construction plans prepared by consultants.
Review engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable standards.
Lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others.
Qualifications – Minimum for All Levels
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (accepted by TX PELS). Master’s or Doctoral degrees may substitute for a Bachelor's degree if accredited by EAC/ABET.
Experience: None for Assistant I; 1 year for Assistant II; 2 years for Assistant III. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license (state vehicle), Safety Impact Certificate. Passing PE exam prior to licensure may substitute for required experience.
Physical Requirements: Sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs; standing, walking, and use of fingers primarily. Environmental exposure outdoors.
Engineering Assistants are required to comply with the EACDP Program Agreement; failure to comply may result in reclassification.
Position is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
