Job Overview
Working with faculty, Clinic Manager and Clinic Supervisor, the Ophthalmic Technician will provide clinical and administrative support to physicians at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. The role offers a no experience required training program designed to develop skills in eye examination, diagnostic testing, equipment maintenance and patient communication. Specific Duties & Responsibilities Clinical
Records patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical condition, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history.
Checks pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect.
Measures central visual field using Amsler Grid.
Instills eye drops under physician’s direction.
Measures and records distance and near visual acuity.
Measures intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, pneumatic tonometry or Schiotz-type indentation tonometer.
Performs Humphrey visual field testing; refers patients for further testing where appropriate.
Performs OCT.
Performs IOL Master measurements to prepare patients for cataract surgery.
Performs Pentacam measurements.
Performs accurate refractions.
Tests color vision and depth perception (stereopsis).
Screens for ocular motility disorders.
Uses slit lamp to examine eye surface.
Performs special testing such as Bright Field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter and pachymetry.
Performs basic maintenance or repair of clinical equipment.
Compiles and enters data for clinical studies; may participate in other research projects.
Teaches patients correct contact lens insertion, removal and handling.
Performs ultrasound scans measuring axial length using A-Scan units; recognizes difficult scans and adjusts unit accordingly.
Calculates intraocular lens power using various formulas, manually or by computer.
Assists with in‑office procedures.
Maintains exam room supply, medication expiration dates and sterilization of instruments.
Disinfects and maintains examination rooms.
Understands microbial control fundamentals.
Familiar with JCAHO requirements and ensures clinic compliance.
Non-Clinical
Reviews and responds to patient questions, Epic in‑basket messages, and routes messages to physicians as needed.
Processes medication refill requests.
Assists with obtaining authorizations for medications and upcoming procedures.
Supports front desk staff by triaging scheduled appointments and explaining technician-related concerns.
Manages and orders medications for intravitreal injections.
Tracks and processes administrative forms (e.g., MVA, disability, FLMA).
Provides input on templates and schedules to maximize patient flow and physician efficiency.
Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and emergencies.
Maintains required COA ophthalmic technician certification.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
CPR certification.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
