What We Do

Our team is revolutionizing mobile and in-car experiences with MapGPT, an advanced voice assistant powered by location intelligence. Our product enables natural and in-depth conversations about directions, landmarks, roads, and other highly dynamic aspects of the world, constantly updated with Mapbox location data. Our team is at the forefront of developing and implementing cutting-edge models and tools like Feedback Agent that power MapGPT's conversational abilities. We use models to integrate sophisticated natural language understanding into real-world applications for both cloud and on-device use. Our work spans across multiple domains, including natural language processing, speech recognition, and machine learning-based recommendations, all tailored for the unique challenges of voice-driven experiences.

What Youll Do

As a Software Development Engineer III on the MapGPT team, you will be responsible for balancing rapid development of new mapping tools against the reliability of our services as they scale into new request volumes, markets, and use cases.

Lead the MapGPT engineering team to identify and scope out well-defined tasks.

Execute on the scope and be accountable for delivering on time with quality.

Design systems and make architectural decisions that will keep pace with the rapid growth of Mapbox’s customer base.

Mentor your peers through 1:1s, facilitating design and code reviews, and providing continuous guidance to foster professional growth and technical excellence.

Promote a culture of operational excellence by meticulously testing and monitoring our systems and code, writing documentation, and being on-call to support the health of our services.

Reduce technical debt, share your knowledge, and invest in your teammates’ health and happiness, while optimizing application performance and accelerating feature velocity.

Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions.

What We Believe Are Important Traits For This Role

8-10+ years of engineering experience: Extensive hands-on experience showcasing expertise and a strong track record in the field.

Technical domain knowledge: Experience coding in languages such as Python, Typescript (backend), and/or Java.

Cloud proficiency: Experience building scalable modern cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Operational excellence: Drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement; strong emphasis on clean code and robust architecture.

LLMs: Experience building an LLM application.

Mentorship: Desire to mentor and lead individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Customer focus: Deep care for customers and their problems, with initiative to innovate on their behalf.

Growth mindset: Humility to accept mistakes and learn from them.

Strong written and vocal communication skills: Ability to convey complex ideas concisely to a wide audience.

Data informed mindset: Value of data-informed decision making and measuring non-trivial metrics.

High standards for work: Drive quality while balancing velocity.

Valuable But Not Required Experience

Background in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Linguistics, or related field.

Experience fine-tuning LLMs and/or running self-hosted LLMs.

Experience with low latency voice applications.

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $190,825 - $258,175 for most US locations and 5% to 10% higher for US locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and actual compensation will be decided based on factors including qualifications, assessed during the interview process, market demands, and work location.
