The Analytical Instrument Technician supports a diverse range of laboratory environments by providing expertise in the installation, maintenance, and repair of advanced scientific instruments (including high‑performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and mass‑spectrometry systems). This role requires continuous learning to keep pace with evolving laboratory equipment and technologies. Under the guidance of managers, specialists, and engineers, the technician rapidly develops necessary skills to deliver exceptional service and support. Beyond technical mastery, this position is responsible for comprehensive service and customer relationship management—diagnosing instrument issues, performing preventive maintenance, and qualifying Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry systems (LC, LC/MS, HPLC/UPLC). Success relies on strong communication, creativity, and a customer focused problem‑solving approach to keep laboratory operations efficient and help customers achieve scientific goals. Responsibilities
Develop and maintain up‑to‑date technical skills and expertise in the maintenance, installation, and repair of analytical lab instrumentation such as high‑performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and mass‑spectrometry systems. Install, optimize, and maintain hardware and software, including Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry systems. Diagnose and resolve instrumentation performance issues via troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance. Advise customers on preventive maintenance and system configurations to improve performance and minimize downtime. Train peer technicians on equipment use, maintenance, and safety procedures. Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track service requests and document activities. Review technical documentation, analyze reports, and recommend corrective actions as needed. Coordinate problem resolution to expedite services and repairs. Meet customer expectations, maintain relationships, and provide follow‑up plans. Ensure compliance with customer regulations, quality system procedures, and health and safety standards. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by Group Leader, Supervisor, or Senior Supervisor. Performs skilled calibrations/services on (M&TE) according to written policy and procedures. Appropriate documentation of calibration work orders with accuracy and timeliness. Performs repairs on all types of M&TE. Processes electronic work orders, house requisitions, miscellaneous purchase orders and various other administrative activities that support daily job functions. Communicates, through various means, such as email, voicemail, and maintenance management system (Maximo) the status of ongoing calibration/repair activities. Completes all necessary qualifications on documents including calibration procedures and standard operating procedures in a timely manner. Completes all necessary training requirements including scheduled training, computer based, and any other training identified in development plan. Develops recommendations for solving M&TE hardware and measurement problems. Develop techniques as necessary to ascertain that newly acquired or developed M&TE performs in accordance with required specifications. Assists in establishing and documenting appropriate job plans, data sheets, and other service protocols that may be required. Ensures that GxP and safe work policies and procedures are followed and maintained at all times in accordance with established company policies. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in a science‑related field (e.g., Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering, Biology) highly preferred; equivalent education, training, or experience will be considered. Associates degree or high school diploma/GED with 5+ years of directly relevant experience may be acceptable. 3‑5+ years of hands‑on experience with analytical instrumentation, such as Chromatography (LC, GC, HPLC/UPLC, SFC) and/or Mass Spectrometry systems. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and address specific customer needs. Personal integrity and commitment to quality. Effective time management and ability to prioritize service requests. Advanced troubleshooting and analytical problem‑solving abilities. Familiarity with Liquid and Gas Chromatography (LC and GC) systems, including operational knowledge and data interpretation. Ability to produce clear and concise documentation. Eagerness to learn and keep pace with new technologies and laboratory solutions. Years of experience/education and/or certifications required
4‑5 or more years of experience. Purpose
To maintain, calibrate, service, troubleshoot and repair measuring and test equipment (M&TE), analytical laboratory equipment, and process control systems used in manufacturing, quality assurance, research and development and plant utilities areas. May be required to work on a variety of electrical, electronic, mechanical, process control systems, optical types, and/or analytical laboratory equipment of M&TE. Experience Level
