About the Position VHB’s growing Atlanta Archaeology Group is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians to support our team for Phase I archaeological field survey work for projects throughout Georgia and the Southeast. Projects are expected to begin in November and last for up to 12 weeks or more. For projects located outside of the greater Atlanta area, hotel room accommodations and meals will be reimbursed. Field vehicles and transportation to survey areas will also be provided. Preference will be given to those candidates who currently reside in the Southeast.
Pay Range $21/hr - $23/hr. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience.
Responsibilities
Conduct Phase I archaeological fieldwork, including pedestrian survey, shovel testing, and field data recording of soils, artifact finds, and site resources.
Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of data using handheld GPS units; Survey123 and Field Maps App.
Work closely with project team under the supervision of VHB archaeologists.
Well-qualified candidates may serve as Crew Chiefs or Field Directors as needed.
Skills and Attributes
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
Motivated to lead and mentor others
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
At least six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, and excavation, and monitoring preferred
Completion of an accredited field school or equivalent experience
Experience working as a field archaeologist. Experience in the southeastern United States preferred.
Experience with the application of standard archaeological field and laboratory techniques
Valid driver’s license
Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies. Must be able to carry field equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods.
