Amazon is building the next generation software, hardware, and processes to run our state-of-the-art global fulfillment network that moves many millions of units of inventory, ensuring that customers get what they want when promised. We are constantly innovating in the ways we are automating and accelerating the delivery of packages which includes custom robotics, mechatronics, conveyance, supply chain optimization, machine learning, manipulation, image processing, and real-time data processing using distributed systems. We are looking for a System Development Engineer with a passion for developing embedded industrial software and control systems to transform the way we integrate robotics within our global network of advanced warehouses. This position is a unique opportunity to be involved in a wide range of automation projects right from the start. You will interface with multiple internal Amazon R&D and design teams as well as the world’s leading automation strategic partners who have the technology and resources to meet Amazon’s growth needs on a global scale.
Key job responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain control software applications for mechatronic systems using modern software development practices, including CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies.
Implement automated testing frameworks and deployment strategies to ensure code quality, reliability, and seamless integration of control systems software.
Develop and optimize motion control algorithms, embedded programs, and real-time control systems for industrial automation.
Drive operational excellence through monitoring, analysis, and continuous improvement of software performance metrics and system reliability.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify process improvements, and troubleshoot issues with mechatronic systems.
30% travel expected to support onsite system testing
Basic Qualifications
4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
2+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
3+ years of professional software engineering & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence experience
2+ years of embedded software development experience
Experience deploying, and supporting mechatronic systems
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
Experience in AWS services
Experience with Linux/Unix
Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs
Experience in a fast-paced, high-tech company, or experience completing complex tasks quickly with little to no guidance and react with appropriate urgency to situations that require a quick turnaround
Experience in technical writing in a relevant field
Experience with CODESYS
Knowledge of industrial fieldbus protocols such as Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT
Experience with multiple Industrial Control System platforms such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Fanuc
Experience influencing engineering best practices within your team
Ability to travel up to 30% and eligible for international travel

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
