Consultant Ophthalmologist – Paediatric / Strabismus Surgeon The closing date is 24 November 2025
We are looking for a dynamic and forward‑thinking Consultant Ophthalmologist to join a supportive team of specialists covering North Cumbria. Main duties of the job Develop an innovative ophthalmic practice, bridging acute hospital care, community and primary care. Deliver a whole‑system approach to safe and effective modern eye care, with a focus on paediatric and strabismus surgery.
Provide general ophthalmic services to a population of approximately 360,000 and handle referrals from parts of South West Scotland and West Northumbria.

Person Specification Education & Qualifications
FRCOphth or equivalent
Full GMC registration
Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award by interview date
Inclusion on the Specialist Registrar in Ophthalmology register within six months of CCT award
Post‑CCT fellowship in applicable sub‑specialty
Experience and Knowledge
High standard of clinical skill and expertise in paediatric and general ophthalmology
Clinical governance and audit experience
Expertise in emergency and elective eye care, including cataract surgery and infant eye screening
Ability to lead and liaise with clinical staff across the service line
Management and Administrative
Efficiency in service delivery and on‑call cover
Audit management experience
Teaching
Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and non‑medical staff
Educational qualifications in teaching
Research, Audit and Clinical Governance
Medical audit and publication experience
Supervision of postgraduate research projects
Communication skills
Empathetic patient communication
Teamworking across multidisciplinary settings
Confident yet approachable style
IT and presentation skills
Continued Professional / Personal Development
Lifelong learning and reflective practice
Participation in peer review processes
Personal Attributes
Availability for on‑call and emergency cover
Full UK driving licence
