Summary Performs a variety of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of the clinical activities in the UNCHCS. The Core Laboratory is comprised of multiple testing areas - Chemistry, Toxicology, Blood Gas Analysis, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Automated Hematology, Manual Hematology, including Smear Review and Body Fluid Analysis, and Specimen Processing.
Hours Monday–Friday, 11:15 PM to 7:45 AM, with 1 in 4 weekends and rotating holidays. Alternative schedules are available and can be discussed.
Responsibilities
Investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
May participate on teams or perform special projects/assignments.
May perform teaching of Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees. May serve as a technical resource.
Performs quality control and equipment maintenance in the appropriate laboratory.
Performs routine and less standardized test procedures which includes special chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic laboratory tests. Observes tests and reactions and provides data.
Prepares specimens and reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required.
Reports results to healthcare providers. Consults/confers with health care providers regarding test results.
Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of report and timely correction of errors.
Education Requirements
Requires Bachelor of Science degree. Must meet eligibility requirements upon hire to sit for MT exam within 12 months of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Must obtain certification within one year of becoming exam eligible.
Professional Experience Requirements
No prior experience required.
