Job Overview Title: Institution Security Officer III Unit: AFSCME, Unit II, Grade 13 Department: Administration Reports to: Director of Safety and Campus Operations Date: October 23, 2025

General Summary:

The Institution Security Officer III is a security professional responsible for maintaining a safe campus environment. The incumbent protects individuals and property on campus, supervises up to 15 contracted security officers, and provides training and reporting to the Director of Safety and Campus Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Act as first responder to all campus emergencies, medical and criminal, that could potentially be hazardous and/or life threatening.

Enforce campus policies and procedures related to safety and security.

Make regular inspection tours of campus facilities, noting unusual occurrences.

Watch for trespassers, fire, water leaks, or other circumstances that could lead to loss of or damage to property and equipment.

Unlock buildings as scheduled for events and ensure all windows and doors are locked as scheduled.

Observe and report hazardous conditions to the Director of Safety and Campus Operations.

Ensure inside and outside lights are turned on/off as required; report malfunctioning electrical or mechanical systems.

Permit only authorized persons to enter the campus while on duty.

Direct visitors and assist as necessary.

Monitor parking lots and direct traffic and parking as necessary.

Enforce campus traffic regulations, including parking and speeding.

Enforce campus policies regarding smoking, alcohol usage, and drug usage.

Observe weather conditions; report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity.

Provide awareness education/information to students and employees upon request.

Perform incidental custodial and maintenance duties when requested (e.g., turning off a water main).

Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements Applicants must have at least one year of full‑time or equivalent part‑time experience in law enforcement, a governmental police force, or a role where protecting buildings, equipment, or people was a major duty.

Equivalency can be demonstrated with a combination of experience and education, such as an associate’s degree in police science, law enforcement, or criminal justice.

Customer service and personal communication skills.

Computer skills: Microsoft Office, Excel, and Access.

Strong written and oral communication and relational skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Proficiency in composing reports, forms, and memos.

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

Experience monitoring and training contracted security officers and campus safety officers.

Independent work ability.

Accessibility for phone communication.

Ability to analyze situations, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure.

Clear written communication of instructions and information.

Additional Information Salary:

$49,261.16 per year (starting rate for AFSCME, Unit II, Grade 13).
