Senior Director - Health Information Management
Location: Miramar, Florida
Memorial Healthcare System is dedicated to improving the health, well‑being, and quality of life for the people entrusted to our care. The Senior Director provides strategic oversight and operational leadership of Coding, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), and Health Information Management (HIM) operations across a six‑hospital integrated health system.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement departmental strategy, goals, and standards in alignment with clinical, administrative, regulatory, and ethical requirements.
Ensure adherence to MHS policies, governmental and regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
Lead operational activities for the electronic medical record system and related HIM applications, including computer‑assisted coding, medical transcription, and document imaging.
Oversee and continuously improve the coder intern training program.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality and custodial responsibility for legal medical records in both paper and electronic formats.
Provide expertise to the Privacy Department on patient identity, fraud issues, and medical record amendments.
Collaborate with key stakeholders to promote communication, support revenue integrity, improve business processes, and ensure reliable reporting.
Lead departmental financial planning to ensure cost‑efficient operations and maximize profitability.
Chair the Legal Medical Record Committee and serve on committees related to privacy, compliance, finance, forms management, EMR, nursing informatics, population health, quality & patient safety, and revenue cycle.
Ensure patient data integrity across identity, transcription, scanning, deficiency analysis, release of information, and CDI programs.
Provide leadership for hospital‑based inpatient and outpatient coding, CDI education, and the clinical documentation integrity program.
Research and monitor industry developments related to HIM and serve as project lead, advisor or sponsor for complex HIM operations projects.
Develop and implement policies and procedures guiding HIM and document imaging business processes to support service delivery and a culture of quality and patient safety.
Plan and monitor onsite and remote staffing activities, including hiring, orientation, evaluation, productivity and quality monitoring, and staff training/education initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (required).
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – AHIMA or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – State of Florida.
Ten (10) years of experience in a healthcare setting with significant experience in HIM, coding, and/or CDI.
Five (5) years in a leadership role within HIM, coding, or CDI.
Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; familiarity with hospital health information management operations, legal and regulatory requirements.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic medical record systems, computer‑assisted coding software, and document imaging systems.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, time‑management, and decisive judgment.
Ability to work in a stressful environment and apply appropriate action when needed.
