ERM is seeking a Principal Consultant, Environmental FERC Project Manager to assist with current client development, new business development, and industry awareness. This position requires prior consulting experience and FERC experience. The role focuses on energy projects with responsibility for advancing permitting and compliance related to Natural Gas Act-regulated projects in the United States, including natural gas transmission and liquefied natural gas (LNG). It requires a deep understanding of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the complexities of energy and environmental policy.

This position can be based anywhere in the U.S.

The Principal Project Manager will work collaboratively with ERM teams and partners to provide industry-leading service to a portfolio of clients; actively participate in industry working‑groups related to potential or proposed policy changes or new initiatives; and stay aware of market conditions and industry trends. The successful candidate will manage multiple client developments concurrently, cultivating new business opportunities through client outreach.

Projects are often fast‑paced, multi‑faceted, and geographically diverse. The candidate must manage varying priorities, deliver high‑quality project deliverables on time and within budget, and demonstrate initiative, critical thinking, and creativity in research, presentation, and issue resolution.

We’re offering an excellent opportunity for an environmental professional to advance their career with a global environmental leader and expand ERM’s team in the natural gas pipeline and LNG capital project delivery service line, with opportunities also in hydrogen, renewables, and carbon sequestration facility focus areas.

Responsibilities

Manage large and complex projects, single or multi‑site, on time and to budget, including scope, budgeting, resourcing, planning, coordinating field and technical work, and managing health, safety, and risk aspects.

Act as client point of contact on a project basis, lead an inter‑disciplinary team to support environmental impact assessment and regulatory permitting (e.g., baseline studies, facility siting and routing studies, land use planning, mitigation), and provide environmental compliance services during construction, commissioning, start‑up, and operations.

Manage multiple projects concurrently, including major natural gas and LNG capital development projects nationwide, as well as hydrogen, renewables, and carbon sequestration facility projects.

Generate technical proposals, identify new leads, and participate in business development with existing clients; maintain client relationships to support repeat business.

Lead strategic meetings with regulatory agencies to address regulatory and/or legislative requirements such as state siting review applications/processes.

Engage with key regulatory agencies, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Marine Fisheries Service, Environmental Protection Agency, federal land management agencies, and State Historic Preservation Offices.

Contribute technical, subject‑matter or project management expertise on environmental critical issue assessments, impact assessment deliverables, and overall quality control review.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Studies, Planning, Geography, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related natural resources science field, or equivalent experience.

Prior consulting experience is required.

6+ years (10 years preferred) of environmental impact assessment and natural resources permitting experience on FERC‑regulated projects, including consulting for private‑sector clients.

At least 5 years of experience managing the permitting of large natural gas and LNG projects, including oversight of complex FERC applications.

Working knowledge of key natural resource regulations, including NEPA, the Clean Water Act (Section 404), the Rivers and Harbors Act (Section 10), the National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106), and the Endangered Species Act (Section 7).

Experience with federal, state, and local permitting.

Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite software.

Demonstrated ability to research and prepare concise and accurate technical documents.

Keen attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative project team.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including effective communication of complex technical knowledge to staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
