We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Manager-level Principal Data Scientist to support our ongoing engineering and data science efforts. This position is remote (subject to your home state) and will be a key player in identifying high-impact AI/ML opportunities with an actuarial reserving focus. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on technical leader with a proven track record in developing sophisticated models, setting up Production‑ready ML pipelines, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams in the healthcare domain.

Primary Responsibilities
Independently support a diverse group of stakeholders in scoping out AI/ML opportunities and develop ML models to improve accuracy of actuarial reserves
Partners with other data scientists to develop AI/ML models for actuarial use cases, using a variety of data sources, including but not limited to medical/Rx claims, inpatient notification data, prior authorization data, and dental/vision data
Partners with Ireland data engineers to ensure appropriate infrastructure and APIs are in place to support AI/ML models development
Leads the development and production of AI/ML models across all UHC lines of business using cloud technology such as databricks and Snowflake
Supports the development of add‑on capabilities for AI/ML use cases, such as model monitoring dashboards and automated jobs in databricks
Collaborates with IT partners on hardware (on‑prem and cloud), software, and other infrastructure needed to enable AI and ML strategy and ensure compliance to UHG standards
Stay connected and involved with UHG s broader engineering and AI/ML strategy

Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in a consulting role and/or demonstrate high proficiency in being a self‑learner
5+ years of healthcare industry experience in a data science or advanced analytics role
5+ years of experience working in high‑level statistical programming language (e.g. Python, R)
Experience with Git version control system (e.g. Github) and knowledge of DevOps and agile development practices
Experience working with data from a variety of sources (e.g. databases, JSON, text‑based, and unstructured data)
Experience designing and implementing ETL and ML engineering pipelines in cloud technology (e.g. databricks, Snowflake)
Experience in applying data science concepts (predictive analytics, machine learning, unsupervised learning) to solve practice business problems
Ability to operate in a fast‑paced environment
Demonstrated proficiency in SQL; experience writing well‑structured and efficient queries
Demonstrated proficiency in IDEs such as Visual Studio
Preferred Qualifications
Credentials in data science (SOA s predictive analytics certificate)
2+ years of Pyspark experience
Experience working with traditional actuarial‑based forecasting and reserving models and methods
Proven excellent storytelling skill set and mastery of communicating complex technical information to a non‑technical audience
Experience with creating databricks jobs and model monitoring dashboards

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you ll find a far‑reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $110,200 to $188,800 annually based on full‑time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
