Job Summary:
This position is open to Department Employees only and oversees the management of finfish, groundfish, and shellfish sport fisheries in the Cook Inlet region of Southcentral Alaska. The coordinator leads the public process that sets management objectives, supervises area management biologists, and coordinates regional programs.
Responsibilities
Manage finfish, groundfish, and shellfish sport fisheries within Cook Inlet region.
Lead the public process that determines management objectives for these fisheries.
Directly supervise three area management biologists in Northern Cook Inlet, Northern Kenai Peninsula, and Lower Cook Inlet.
Supervise the Region II Access Program.
Coordinate materials and communications for the Alaska Board of Fisheries.
Investigate ways to increase sport fishing opportunities and reduce regulatory complexity.
Communicate with fishery stakeholders, the public, and Department staff regarding regional management decisions.
Mentor fishery biologists under the coordinator’s supervision.
Participate in budget prioritization and other regional conservation decisions.
Qualifications & Skills
Advanced knowledge of fisheries ecology and management.
Advanced communication skills including public speaking to a variety of audiences.
Experience supervising professional-level staff and overseeing complex, unrelated projects.
Experience preparing for Alaska Board of Fisheries meetings and presenting complex fisheries topics to the board.
Experience working with fisheries management plans and complex fishing regulations.
Ability to carry a firearm while in the field.
Valid driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management; and seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist, including at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level. Substitutions and advanced degrees are outlined in the full qualification statement.

Occasional travel within the State for field visits and board meetings (1–3 trips of up to a week per year).
