Assistant Controller – Washington, DC (Onsite | Metro Accessible)

Our client, a high-impact nonprofit advocacy organization with multiple affiliated entities, seeks a detail-oriented Assistant Controller with experience in nonprofit and PAC financial operations. This temp-to-permanent role is ideal for a candidate with public accounting roots and hands-on expertise in complex, multi-entity environments. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this individual will oversee key accounting and reporting activities while supporting the organization’s mission through financial integrity, compliance, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day accounting operations related to multiple entities, including major asset and liability classes such as cash, pledges, investments, fixed assets, right-of-use assets, and accounts payable.
Review and post general ledger transactions for affiliated entities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and tax reporting standards.
Prepare and deliver timely, high-quality financial reports for leadership review.
Support the implementation of new accounting standards and assess their impact on financial reporting.
Partner with Finance leadership to refine shared services cost structures and functional expense reporting.
Collaborate with Development to ensure proper accounting treatment for donor gifts, endowment distributions, and quarterly reporting.
Monitor and strengthen internal controls, ensuring all processes operate efficiently and effectively.
Contribute to annual departmental goals and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
Minimum
7 years of professional accounting experience , preferably within a complex, multi-entity or nonprofit environment.
Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting theory.
Proven ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work collaboratively across departments.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Experience with
Microsoft Dynamics, Workday Adaptive, Salesforce, Anybill, or Concur
is highly preferred.
