Under general supervision, interview Emergency Department patients to obtain necessary information, prepare admission/registration forms, gather insurance information and perform clerical and computer operational tasks related to the admission of inpatients and outpatients.

Key Responsibilities

Interview patients experiencing a medical emergency.

Complete arrival and registration functions for patients presenting with immediate, life‑threatening illness or injury, emergency petitions, sexual assault, psych evaluation, or substance abuse.

Use standard precautions to prevent exposure to blood and other body fluids.

Follow EMTALA regulations related to registration and collection of co‑payments in the Emergency Department.

Perform bedside registrations for ER patients, patients directly admitted to the hospital, and Skilled Nursing Facility/Sub‑acute unit admissions, ensuring complete and accurate information is obtained from the patient, a family member, or the sending facility.

Provide accurate insurance entry for new and out‑of‑state patients, patients presenting for auto accidents, and other scenarios; verify benefits via Epic Real‑Time Eligibility and follow insurance requirements such as Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire.

Collect co‑pays, deductibles, out‑of‑pocket payments, and balances due via check or credit card; authorize all credit card transactions using Epic.

Meet or exceed departmental registration timing standard of 7 minutes per patient and registration accuracy of 97% as evaluated quarterly.

Assist in training new employees and cover as needed at Hospital Information Desks; work closely with Information Desk and Lobby Escort volunteers.

Perform clerical duties, computer operational duties, filing, record‑keeping, answering phones, and providing excellent customer service.

Handle security keycard distribution for VIPs at L&D.

Education & Certifications

High School Diploma or GED.

CHAA certification preferred.

Experience

1 to 2 years of related experience preferred.

6 months to 1 year working in an Emergency Department preferred.

Completion of a Medical Terminology class preferred.

Skills

Ability to work calmly and efficiently in high‑stress environments.

Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Knowledge of insurance coverage and billing, collection procedures, laws, rules, and regulations.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Skilled in using computers and personal productivity applications.

Excellent customer‑service techniques.

Ability to multitask and prioritize.

Strong typing speed and accuracy.

Ability to work in a patient‑care environment with exposure to infection and/or contagious disease.

Pay Range $16.85 – $25.59 per hour.
