Medication Access Coordinator - Pharmacy Technician, Hybrid
Boston Medical Center (BMC) provides a specialty pharmacy service to meet the complex medication needs of its chronic patients. The Medication Access Coordinator is a unique role that delivers integrated support to patients and pharmacists, ensuring a hands‑on approach to total quality patient care. This position is essential to the growth and maintenance of the specialty pharmacy business line and to supporting the health system’s operating margin.
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Relationship Development & Client Sales
Manage and grow patient account base through recruitment and retention of specialty pharmacy services across the BMC Health System.
Collaborate with providers, clinic staff and payers to refer and retain patients in the specialty program.
Track recruitment metrics and provide performance reports to leadership.
Patient Retention
Encourage patients to use BMC pharmacy and fully benefit from its superior patient‑care services.
Provide medication‑adherence support through ongoing therapy check‑ups, refill processing and patient outreach.
Triage patient needs to pharmacists and secure safe medication usage.
Personnel & Operational Responsibilities
Build and maintain relationships with providers, care teams and ancillary support to sustain sales functions.
Integrate with clinic staff, represent the pharmacy department and own medication needs of clinic patients.
Coordinate care across patients, initiate prior authorizations, copay assistance and connect patients with financial services.
Communicate with providers and pharmacy‑management teams regarding new initiatives and patient‑care issues.
Adherence to BMC’s RESPECT Behavioral Standards and ethical pharmacy practice.
Provide safe, effective pharmacy services and maintain a positive customer‑service experience.
Follow all confidentiality and privacy policies when handling patient and insurance data.
Job Requirements
HS Diploma or G.E.D. required; AA or BA preferred.
Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy or hold a Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern License.
Current active National Certification verified by PTCB or ExCPT required.
Minimum 4–5 years of pharmacy experience (Pharmacy Interns in their 2nd year are acceptable).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent English oral and written communication skills; professional phone etiquette.
Strong interpersonal skills to deliver personalized customer service and advocate for patients.
Organized, detail‑oriented, self‑directed with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to learn other applications quickly.
Familiarity with 340B drug program, ACO hospital models, and prior‑authorization processes.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of transplant, hepatitis C, infectious diseases (including HIV), oncology and/or other specialty medication therapies.
Bilingual or multilingual skills beyond English.
Experience with submission of prior authorization requests to third‑party payers.
Knowledge of QS1/NRx, EPIC, Salesforce, Navinet.
