Consultant, Brokerage Primary Casualty Underwriting - E&S/Specialty
Nationwide is seeking an experienced Underwriting Consultant to join our Property & Casualty team. This role focuses on underwriting individual risks for excess & surplus lines in the primary casualty line of business, partnering with brokers, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders to deliver innovative insurance solutions. Job Description Summary
As an Underwriting Consultant in Brokerage Casualty, you will underwrite complex risks, determine pricing, manage reinsurance placement, and achieve production and loss ratio goals while fostering strong broker relationships. Key Responsibilities
Research and develop new classes of business, assess market viability, create forms & endorsements, and develop rates with actuarial support; on large, complex accounts partner with Actuarial team to develop rates/pricing, Finance team to review insured profitability, and claims team on potential loss frequency and severity. Review individual risks with assigned brokers and either decline or accept business based on necessary information; analyze exposures, develop adequate premium, determine endorsements and exclusions, and place reinsurance as needed. Achieve production and loss ratio goals with assigned brokers through broker management and marketing; analyze premium and loss results by state, major classes of business, and continually assess quality of broker submissions and recommend corrective actions. Oversee policy maintenance items and mid‑term requests; review endorsement requests, authorize necessary changes, review Loss Control reports and partners with brokers for compliance, and take appropriate action on claim activity. Foster positive broker relationships through frequent contact; develop and maintain rapport, resolve conflicts, travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits, and assist with marketing ideas and events. Place reinsurance per department guidelines using treaties, semiautomatic, and facultative facilities; maintain good working relationship with reinsurers. Resolve complex technical questions and proactively develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues; teach classes to brokers, SSU students, and underwriters. Mentor new and existing underwriting talent. Reporting Relationships
Reports to Underwriting Manager. May have up to three direct reports. Indirect reports not typically assigned. Typical Skills And Experiences
Education: Undergraduate degree preferred; equivalent experience considered. License/Certification: Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred. Experience: Eight years of CL underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts; excess & surplus lines experience preferred. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge of complex CL underwriting policies, insurance law, underwriting/marketing principles, Standard Bureau Rating plans, catastrophe management, alternative rating methods, reinsurance, regulatory issues, wholesale broker system, market conditions, and company operations. Leadership skills and competencies are valuable. Values

Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible). Working Conditions: Normal office environment; extended and non‑standard work hours based on project and customer deliverable; travel required. ADA

National salary range: $94,000.00–$194,000.00. Expected starting salary range: $104,000.00–$156,000.00. Benefits
