Position Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Construction Project Accountant to oversee and manage the financial activities of multiple construction projects. This role is vital to ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparency in all project-related financial operations. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with project managers, senior accountants, and leadership to provide timely financial insights, ensure budgetary control, and support informed decision-making throughout each project’s lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities Daily Accounting Functions & Processes
Manage accounts payable (AP), including vendor invoices, subcontractor billings, and material purchases.
Match purchase orders, delivery tickets, and invoices to verify accuracy and ensure proper coding to project cost codes.
Track retention and ensure compliance with subcontract terms.
Record daily project costs accurately against budget and cost codes.
Maintain and reconcile job cost reports in collaboration with project managers.
Support budget-to-actual variance analysis, including committed costs, change orders, and potential cost exposures.
General Ledger & Month-End Accounting
Post journal entries and maintain project-level ledgers.
Reconcile project accounts, bank accounts, and vendor statements.
Assist in the month-end close process, including accruals and Work in Progress (WIP) schedules.
Grant & Financial Coordination
Collaborate with grantees on financial matters, ensuring proper documentation and tracking.
Coordinate with the Governor’s Office regarding grant transfers and expense transactions.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain project-related financial records, including contracts, insurance certificates, and lien waivers.
Ensure compliance with internal controls, contractual obligations, and state/federal regulations.
Support audits, tax filings, and other external reporting requirements.
Highly Desirable Skills
Experience using AZ360 or similar ERP/accounting systems.
Experience with eCivis or other grant management systems.
Knowledge of process improvement within project accounting and management.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Soft Skills
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable.
Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
5–10 years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction or project-based industries.
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
