Job Description
Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practice in a manner that enhances patient and caregiver engagement.
Essential Functions
- Accurately collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic and engaging team with workload ranging from fast‑paced hospital settings and high/low volume clinics. Caregivers in this role gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare for workplace and career advancement.
- Perform specimen collection using many different techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections, from patients of various acuities including Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient – including newborns, intensive care patients, and all other hospital areas. Adhere to and enforce laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
- Adhere to personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings, including gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks.
- Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction. Opportunities for growth include patient registration, participating in CODE response teams, training and mentoring new staff, specimen processing, and special projects.
- Organize work, navigate multiple computer systems, work as a team member and maintain a clean and safe environment. Candidates are resilient and can manage stressful situations professionally.

Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Six months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor.
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interaction with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information quickly and accurately.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy; frequent computer use and typing for documentation.
- Expected to lift and transfer patients, bend to retrieve and carry supplies including heavy items.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients; push/pull gurneys and portable equipment; navigate crowded busy rooms.
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
