Job Description
- The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, labeling, and processing biological specimens such as blood, urine, and other samples according to established procedures.
 - This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent patient interaction skills, and the ability to perform venipunctures efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
 
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and process samples using centrifuges as required.
 - Collect and store specimens according to established protocols.
 - Clearly explain specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture and other sample types (e.g., urine or fecal).
 - Demonstrate proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles.
 - Verify physician orders and ensure requisition forms match specimen tubes accurately.
 - Label, split, and freeze specimens as required for specific tests.
 - Review test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure accuracy.
 - Package specimens for safe and proper transport.
 - Maintain specimen integrity by following proper storage and temperature requirements.
 - Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations for safety and compliance.
 - Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as necessary.
 - Update patient information accurately in the system.
 - Answer telephone inquiries and provide laboratory results when appropriate.
 - Attend annual departmental training and comply with all lab policies and procedures.
 
Must Have
- Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state).
 - Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipuncture in a lab or hospital setting.
 - High school diploma or GED.
 - Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
 
Skills
- Phlebotomy (minimum 1 year of experience).
 - Experience performing blood draws on older patients and difficult (“hard stick”) cases.
 - Strong data entry and processing skills.
 - High attention to detail and accuracy.
 - Good computer skills.
 - Ability to manage a large volume of patients efficiently.
