Overview

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, labeling, and processing patient specimens while ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance with laboratory standards. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine, fecal) to patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Review and interpret physicians’ orders accurately.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify that all test requisitions and computer labels are correct before processing.
  • Package and prepare specimens for transport following proper procedures.
  • Store specimen samples at appropriate temperatures and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend required departmental training.
  • Answer phone calls and provide laboratory results as requested.

Requirements / Must Have

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required).
  • Minimum 6 months of work experience performing venipuncture in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience.

Skills

  • Phlebotomy (minimum 1 year of experience).
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages.
  • Experience handling difficult (“hard”) sticks and needles.
  • Data entry and processing accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of patients efficiently.
