UC Health is hiring a part‑time Lab Technician for the Phlebotomy Department on the Third Shift at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The Lab Technician collects specimens by venipuncture, skin puncture or other special collection techniques, receives specimens (accessioning) into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and performs pre‑analytic processing of specimens.

Qualifications

  • High‑school diploma or GED required; formal phlebotomy training program or externship.
  • Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements and laboratory terminology; ability to read and comprehend written information required.
  • Keyboarding skills preferred.
  • Ability to perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast‑paced environment.
  • Effective customer service skills in accordance with hospital RITE values.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture, skin puncture, or other special collection techniques.
  • Follow proper patient identification protocols and established blood collection protocols.
  • Access specimens into LIS, ensuring accurate demographic information.
  • Perform pre‑analytic processing: centrifugation, aliquoting, volume measurement, and assessment of adequacy for testing.
  • Transport specimens to relevant testing departments and ensure all specimens are accounted for at shift end.
  • Maintain and clean phlebotomy cart/tray and workstation.
  • Communicate status of uncompleted collections and respond to Mobile Care Phlebotomy System notifications.
  • Monitor for additional orders and retrieve samples as needed.
  • Train associates/students in phlebotomy and processing tasks.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures in all phases of specimen collection, transportation, and processing.
  • Complete mandatory competencies and training modules; maintain compliance with department and hospital policies; participate in staffing meetings.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and adhere to RITE values during phone inquiries.
