Stormwater Maintenance Senior Heavy Equipment Operator – City of Durham

Location: Durham, NC

Hiring range: $46,851–$60,897, negotiable based on qualifications.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE

Perform highly skilled maintenance, repair, and replacement of City stormwater infrastructure, operating heavy equipment and leading work crews.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Serve as crew leader; oversee crew performance and safety.
• Operate heavy equipment: dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, skid steers, front‑end loaders, excavators, Jet‑Vac, tractors, etc.
• Maintain and perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Use hand tools and power tools for construction and maintenance tasks.
• Lay pipe, construct and repair manholes, install curb and gutter, perform concrete work.
• Perform landscaping duties (weed control, seeding, herbicide application).
• Respond to severe weather events; conduct on‑call duties as needed.
• Prepare daily logs, reports, and use computer software for data entry.
• Assist other departments and agencies as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Operational and preventative maintenance of light and heavy construction equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety protocol for equipment operation.
• Traffic law knowledge and proper equipment operation.
• Geographic knowledge of City street locations.
• Computer and administrative software proficiency.
• Leadership skills for small crew management.
• Effective oral and written communication.
• Customer service skills when interacting with citizens.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Exert up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, 20 lbs constantly. Requires climbing, crouching, kneeling and repeated motions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ten (10) years operating light to heavy duty construction equipment.
• Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Valid North Carolina Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 1 year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in stormwater infrastructure maintenance, repair and construction.
