Overview No Starch Press—publisher of bestsellers like Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, Practical Malware Analysis, and Python Crash Course—is seeking a skilled Production Editor to manage the production of ~20 titles per year. You’ll oversee schedules, budgets, and page proofs; guide authors and freelancers; and ensure every book meets our high standards of accuracy, style, and design. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of book production experience, deep familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. This is a fast-paced, detail-driven role within a small, collaborative team producing globally respected technical titles. Hybrid (San Francisco) or remote for standout candidates.

Responsibilities

Manage production of approximately 20 titles per year, including schedules and budgets

Oversee page proofs and ensure accuracy, style, and design standards

Guide authors and freelancers throughout the production process

Collaborate with internal teams to maintain high-quality technical titles

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of professional book production experience

Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop) and Microsoft Office

Mastery of the Chicago Manual of Style; strong copyediting and proofreading ability

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines

Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills

Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems independently

Experience coordinating with authors, editors, and freelancers

Comfortable adopting new tools and workflows; proactive in process improvement
