(85101). Department: Heart and Vascular Institute. Reports to: Administrator, Faculty Supervisor, Director of Advanced Practice Professionals of the Heart and Vascular Institute. FLSA STATUS: Exempt. Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of cardiology patients (including biological, social and psychological assessments). The APP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient and reviews the plan of care with the clinical team, participates in directing care, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, and coordinates discharge planning/follow-up (as applicable). The APP participates in education of residents and medical/nursing students. Provides healthcare services consistent with state law and licensing/certification authority requirements and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Such service may include but is not limited to the responsibilities described below. Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion Experience
Acute care or cardiology experience preferred Eligible new graduates will be considered Preferred Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
ACNP preferred, but FNPs will be considered Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant required Graduate of an ARC-PA approved PA program required Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
Master’s level education as Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant preferred Core Duties and Responsibilities

Manages comprehensive and individualized care for cardiology patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post-discharge in the ambulatory setting Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure evaluations Completes integrated assessments Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate in collaboration with cardiology faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for cardiology patients, including teaching and discharge planning as applicable Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum of educational experience and certification Identifies unstable or complex cardiology care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention Recognizes emergencies and initiates effective emergency care Evaluates cardiology patients and coordinates follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting Assists in collection of outcome measures (as applicable) Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision making Utilizes equipment safely Bases decisions on scientific principles and standards of care Utilizes teaching/learning theory to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families and the community Promotes an environment supportive of learning and respects patient/family preferences Updates knowledge base throughout the year and completes clinical competencies Serves as a resource for staff caring for cardiology patients; provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel Participates in community programs and distribution of literature as appropriate Documents plan of care, interventions and evaluations clearly in the medical record Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve outcome-based improvements in care Provides leadership in developing and implementing changes in cardiology practice to improve outcomes Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff for problem solving and professional support Participates in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development and education; serves as a professional role model Promotes innovation in expanded care delivery for cardiology patients in inpatient and ambulatory settings Participates and provides leadership for committees and task forces Documents hours and submits billing reports as appropriate Reviews and interprets cardiology data and recommends changes to improve care Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator Assists cardiology faculty, administrators, and directors in outcome measure collection Other duties/projects as assigned Physical Requirements
