Overview

Tax Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property role at BDO USA. The Tax Senior applies industry knowledge and experience to advise clients on tax implications and other accounting matters affecting business objectives, with emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. Responsibilities

Identify complex situations requiring research, outline the issue and appropriate sources of research. Analyze researched facts and sources prior to composing a detailed report of findings. Develop relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel, Department of Treasury, etc. Routinely stay current on unclaimed property statutory, regulatory and case law changes. Unclaimed Property Compliance

Obtain and manipulate data from clients to prepare annual escheat returns. Use FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems for data gathering; import data into FSI Track and prepare returns. Identify appropriate B2B and other exemptions/deferrals; perform reconciliations between data gathered and data reported. Draft responses to notices from state authorities; assist with due diligence letter processing and client payment processing; assist with exam support and routine client communications. Unclaimed Property Consulting

Draft memorandums, opinions and other documentation on escheat issues; participate in escheat planning processes and policy development. Represent clients in unclaimed property audits and voluntary disclosures; assist with identifying gift card planning opportunities and remediation procedures. Develop exposure quantification models and assist with client refunds; apply applicable state tax sub-specialties and confer with STS professionals when appropriate. Ensure engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work; manage engagements and contribute to consultative selling strategies. Stay involved in trade organizations and networking events; routinely update CRM entries and manage client expectations. Unclaimed Property Related Software

Utilize FSI Track, tax research databases and other software; maintain working knowledge of GL systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, AS/400, Epicor, etc.). Participate in technology enhancements for the unclaimed property group. Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise day-to-day workload of SALT Experienced Associates and Associates on engagements; ensure training on relevant software. May evaluate performance and assist in goal setting and professional development; deliver periodic performance feedback and evaluations. Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance (required). Two or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing or forensic accounting in a public accounting firm or in-house organization (required). CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word); Power BI, Alteryx or similar tools preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication; strong analytical and research abilities; solid organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines; capable of multi-tasking and working independently or in a team. Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and develop client relationships; ability to interact with professionals at all levels; strong knowledge of tax standards and applicable information sources.
