Tax Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property Applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by advising on tax implications and accounting matters that affect their business objectives, with an emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This unique role allows the professional to use tax and accounting skills in a consultative capacity, analyzing sporadic data sets and modeling solutions.

Responsibilities

Research complex situations, outline issues and identify appropriate sources.

Analyze facts and sources, compose detailed reports of research findings.

Develop relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax/Revenue personnel and Treasury.

Keep abreast of latest relevant unclaimed property statutory, regulatory and case law changes.

Obtain and manipulate client data for annual escheat returns; use FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems.

Import data, prepare returns, identify appropriate B2B exemptions and deferrals.

Perform reconciliations on data reported and compose responses to state notices.

Assist with due diligence letter processing, client payment processing, exam support, and routine client communication.

Draft memorandums, opinions and documentation on escheat issues.

Work with unclaimed property leadership to determine escheat planning processes.

Participate in developing policy and procedures, addressing internal controls.

Represent clients on audits and voluntary disclosures, mitigating exposures.

Assist with gift card planning opportunities and implementation.

Assist leadership with client interviews, onsite visits, workplans.

Compile general ledger detail, banking records and other relevant source data.

Prepare and review scheduling decks for sporadic data in unclaimed property templates.

Assist with remediation procedures and exposure quantification models.

Assist with client refund review process.

Apply applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and consult with other STS professionals.

Ensure engagement letters are adopted and manage engagements.

Assist leadership with consultative selling strategies.

Engage in trade organizations, public speaking, networking events.

Update CRM entries and manage client expectations.

Project‑manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise day‑to‑day workload of SALT associates and interns, review work product.

Train associates on relevant software.

Evaluate performance and assist in development of goals and objectives.

Deliver performance feedback and complete evaluations.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance, required.

Experience

Two (2) or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing or forensic accounting in a public accounting firm or in‑house organization, required.

License/Certifications

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent), preferred.

Software

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word, required.

Experience with Power BI, Alteryx, and other software, preferred.

Advanced knowledge and understanding of taxable conditions and related tax issues.

Salary Range National Range: $73,500 - $131,250

Maryland Range: $73,500 - $131,250

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $73,500 - $131,250

Washington DC Range: $73,500 - $131,250
