Overview

The City of Laguna Beach is looking for a passionate and knowledgeable professional to fill the position of Wastewater Utility Worker I. As the Wastewater Utility Worker I, you will perform routine construction, maintenance, operation, and repair tasks related to the City's wastewater collection systems and equipment. Responsibilities include cleaning sewer lines and lift stations, installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing sewer facilities and equipment. You will operate various motorized equipment and vehicles, conduct inspections, and perform necessary repairs to ensure the integrity of sewer systems, adhering to safety protocols and regulations. You will respond to emergency calls, take appropriate safety measures, and carry out related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Perform routine construction, maintenance, operation, and repair tasks related to the City's wastewater collection systems and equipment.

Clean sewer lines and lift stations; install, modify, maintain, and repair sewer facilities and equipment.

Operate motorized equipment and vehicles; conduct inspections and perform necessary repairs to ensure system integrity.

Respond to emergency calls and adhere to safety protocols and regulations.

Carry out related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Experience:

Wastewater Utility Worker I — two (2) years of general maintenance or repair work. Experience in municipal sewer system repair is highly desirable.

License/Certificate Requirements:

Possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at time of hire. A Class A or B Driver's License is required within 12 months of appointment.

Special Requirements

Positions may require emergency response during non-scheduled hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

DOT Compliance In compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the City’s policy on random testing for controlled substances and alcohol for commercially licensed drivers, candidates who are commercially licensed must pass a drug test prior to placement. All employees subject to maintaining a commercial driver’s license will be enrolled in the City’s Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol.

Application & Selection Process

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies in the same or lower classifications.

All interested applicants must submit a completed online city application. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis with a first review on October 15, 2025. Selected applicants will be invited to a Structured Panel Interview to evaluate knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The appointing hiring authority will review job-related qualifications of eligible applicants before making a selection. The process may be modified based on City needs.

Pre-employment Process

Selected candidates must pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice and a pre-placement physical including a drug test.

Education and employment verification and reference checks will also be conducted.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Working Conditions Work is performed in varied environmental conditions with exposure to outdoor temperatures, weather variations, traffic and equipment noise, vibrations, fumes, grease, machinery and moving parts, odors, dust, chemicals such as cleaning solvents, and raw sewage. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, or more with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods; and move between locations as needed. Requires near and far vision for documents and computer use, and acute hearing for phone/personal service. Work is outdoors; travel to different locations and exposure to inclement weather, noise, vibration, dust, or hazardous chemicals may occur. The noise level is typically moderate to high, and the role may involve driving motorized vehicles and working in heavy traffic conditions.
