Zurich Insurance is currently hiring an experienced Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter – MM Life Science to join the Middle Market team in New York.

Job Overview The Middle Markets segment is a key business area within Zurich North America focused on delivering end‑to‑end solutions for our customers, including international programs. The successful candidate will handle complex new and renewal Middle Markets business and serve as a subject‑matter expert for Life Science underwriting.

Responsibilities

Serve as a Life Science industry practice advocate, focusing on improving the customer experience by understanding risk and offering best‑in‑class solutions.

Apply a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.

Use risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale.

Assist in refining underwriting guidelines for Life Science exposures.

Identify gaps in customer programs and align Zurich’s products and value proposition to provide contract certainty.

Demonstrate strong analytical skills and act as an innovative advisor.

Underwrite, analyze, and generate new and renewal business for Life Science risks.

Communicate Life Science defenses and exposure analysis for product liability.

Operate within the growing Middle Markets division, focusing on market-facing production.

Collaborate with multiple groups to build knowledge of Life Science exposures, controls, market requirements, and opportunities.

Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manual rules.

Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships.

Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.

Basic Qualifications – Underwriting Specialist

High School Diploma or Equivalent with 3+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

High School Diploma or Equivalent with 6+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 1+ year experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 4+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Knowledge of line(s) of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.

Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Basic Qualifications – Executive Underwriter

Bachelor’s Degree.

Knowledge of Middle Markets Property & Casualty Life Science underwriting.

5+ years of experience underwriting Life Science product liability on a primary basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Existing broker relationships in the East Coast region.

Strong negotiation skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proactive relationship building and win‑win negotiating skills; presentation skills and a solutions‑oriented mindset.

Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and national/local filing regulations and guidelines.

Compensation Compensation for this role varies by location, role, skill set, and experience. The proposed salary ranges are: • Underwriting Specialist: $81,800.00 – $133,900.00 • Executive Underwriter: $108,200.00 – $177,100.00 Short‑term incentive bonuses are set at 10% for Specialists and 15% for Executives.
