Brief Overview The Medical Interpreter/Translator I plays a vital role in facilitating effective communication between Stanford Health Care (SHC) providers and patients by delivering high-quality interpretation and translation services. This position supports patient care in person, via video, and over the phone, as appropriate.
The Medical Interpreter/Translator I will provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, as well as sight translation and written translation services. Key responsibilities include bridging language barriers while ensuring patient confidentiality and adhering to both the Medical Interpreter Professional Ethics and SHC policies. The Medical Interpreter/Translator I will directly assist patients, their families, healthcare providers, and other staff members by ensuring clear and accurate communication throughout the healthcare experience. This position is essential in guaranteeing that all patients receive equitable access to healthcare services and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for diverse populations.

What You Will Do
Provide in-person consecutive and simultaneous interpretation as assigned by dispatcher or requested by providers
Provide consecutive interpretation via video or phone
Provide sight translation following standard workflow and ethical guidelines
Provide short translation of texts up to 5 lines for IP or Video Medical Interpretation (VMI) encounters (within standard work and ethical guidelines)
Provide first draft translation or machine post‑editing of AI translation into working languages, as assigned
Provide document alignment and proofreading services
Provide linguistic expertise in working languages
Mentor interns (beginning 6 months after date of hire at SHC)
Mentor new hires (beginning one year after date of hire at SHC)
Participate in focus and beta testing groups for institutional and departmental workflows, tools, and equipment as necessary
Provide voiceover services as requested
Proctor staff and agency candidate competency testing as requested
Document encounters in electronic medical record (EMR) system according to departmental standards
Other duties as assigned
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma Required
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent from foreign university) in interpretation/translation preferred
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent from foreign university) in another field and completion of medical interpreting certificate program preferred
CHI (Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic) or CoreCHI-P performance preferred
Experience Qualifications
One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience or completion of Stanford Medical Interpretation Internship
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency in English and the designated language of service and skilled in interpretation and translation, demonstrated by passing the SHC Medical Interpretation and Translation exam
Strong ability to establish and maintain excellent customer relationships, showcasing exemplary interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and professionalism in both business and personnel matters
Commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of protected and sensitive information as governed by legal regulations, institutional policies, and professional interpreter and translator codes of ethics
Capacity to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment in high stress or challenging situations
Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels within the organization
Skilled in maintaining professional boundaries in all interactions
Awareness of cultural and perceptual factors that may influence patient communication
Knowledge of medical terminology to facilitate accurate interpretation and translation
Licenses and Certifications
Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) preferred
CoreCHI-Performance (CoreCHI-P) preferred

Base Pay Scale Generally starting at $38.91 - $43.82 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
