JOIN OUR HR TEAM Our HR team is seeking a seasoned Senior HR Generalist with a focus on Labor Relations. The ideal candidate will bring extensive hands‑on experience working with unionized workforces, a deep understanding of collective bargaining agreements, and proven expertise in benefits administration and leave coordination under both California and federal regulations. Bilingual English/Spanish fluency and the ability to build trust with all workplace constituents are essential. This is a key role in fostering a positive union‑management partnership in a dynamic agricultural processing plant.
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Senior HR Generalist – Labor Relations provides year‑round HR operational and employee relations support to the Gonzales facility, with a strong focus on union labor relations, compliance with collective bargaining agreements, and enforcement of federal and state employment laws. This role requires advanced bilingual fluency (English/Spanish) and serves as a key liaison between management, employees, and union representatives. The position ensures that HR practices are executed consistently, employee matters are handled with professionalism and confidentiality, and compliance standards are met across all employment activities. The Senior HR Generalist – Labor Relations also provides support in onboarding, investigations, performance documentation, training coordination, and HR reporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Union & Employee Relations
Support day-to-day HR operations for a unionized workforce, ensuring compliance with labor contracts, grievance procedures, and applicable labor laws (NLRA, FLSA, CA Labor Code).
Foster positive labor–management relations through effective communication, education, and follow-up.
Serve as a first point of contact for employee relations concerns, escalating sensitive issues to the HR Supervisor as needed.
Document and track employee relations cases; ensure accuracy, fairness, and consistency in investigations and disciplinary documentation.
Assist in preparation for grievance meetings and maintain organized case files for review.
HR Administration & Compliance
Maintain and audit employee files, I-9 forms, and HRIS data for accuracy and compliance.
Support the administration of employment leaves, benefits, and employment verifications as needed.
Ensure compliance with company policies by implementing and interpreting collective bargaining agreements, supporting both employee and management-side union relations, and leading adherence to California and federal leave and benefit laws.
Participate in audits and assist in developing corrective actions when necessary.
Onboarding, Training & Employee Engagement
Lead orientation and onboarding sessions for new hires at the Gonzales facility, ensuring compliance with company and union standards.
Coordinate required trainings (harassment prevention, safety, handbook, and policy updates).
Support employee recognition, engagement, and communication efforts to strengthen retention and workplace culture.
Operational & Administrative Support
Prepare HR correspondence such as status change letters, warnings, and separation notices.
Maintain schedules, reports, and logs required for audits, union communications, and HR metrics.
Interact directly with union stewards, participate in disciplinary meetings, handle grievance procedures from intake through resolution, and advise supervisors on contract interpretation.
Report on leave incidence, benefits utilization, grievances, or arbitrations needed for compliance or management review.
Collaborate with the HR team to ensure timely processing of employee updates and issue resolution.
Provide coverage support for HR-related inquiries during evening and Saturday shifts as needed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; or equivalent HR experience.
Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in an HR or Business Partner role, including at least 2 years in a union environment and direct experience negotiating, implementing, or enforcing collective bargaining agreements.
Experience with California leave laws (CFRA, PDL, SDI), FMLA, and benefits administration for both union and non-union populations.
Knowledgeable in NLRA, California Wage Orders, PAGA, and current best practices in benefits administration for unionized workforces.
Strong understanding of collective bargaining agreements, grievance procedures, and union labor law.
Experience in agriculture, manufacturing, or processing facility preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems (e.g., ADP, UKG Kronos).
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual (English/Spanish) — must be able to read, write, and speak at an advanced level in both languages.
Agricultural/Processing industry experience preferred.
Thorough knowledge of federal and California employment and labor laws.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to build trust with diverse employee groups.
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy.
Ability to work independently while maintaining a team-oriented approach.
Demonstrated discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and peak seasonal schedules as required.
