Bldg & Env Services Technician - Advanced University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Position Number: 00018112, Vacancy ID: P020607. Permanent staff, full-time, 40 hours per week, M-F 6:00 AM–2:30 PM.

Salary range: $42,721 – $47,674. Sign‑on bonus: $3,974 paid in two installments.

Position Summary Position is responsible for the cultivation, maintenance and promotion of plants, turf or a plant collection in an assigned program or geographical area of the University. Responsibilities include diagnosing structural and horticultural problems; installing new plant material, maintaining beds, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and pesticide spraying; operating and maintaining landscape and road equipment; assisting in cultural activities, landscape installation, repair of irrigation systems, landscape design and construction; supplying special foliage for events; and serving on the snow and ice management team during winter months.

Responsibilities

Diagnose and address structural and horticultural issues.

Install new plant material following approved practices.

Maintain beds: pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, pesticide spraying.

Operate and maintain landscape and road equipment.

Assist in landscape design, construction, and special foliage supply.

Serve on the snow and ice management team during winter months.

Apply winter weather practices and report for mandatory University operations.

Work overtime and weekend or night occasionally as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Demonstrated possession of competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and perform medium to heavy physical work. Equivalent combination of training and experience acceptable. NC driver’s license required.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Landscape maintenance experience or equivalent training and experience.

Ability to safely operate road and landscape equipment.

Effective planting of trees, shrubs, plants, and foliage.

Monitoring watering needs and safely applying herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide.

Effective communication skills.

Experience applying winter weather practices and working during adverse weather.

NC driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Advanced level of landscape maintenance experience or equivalent training and experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

NC Driver’s License.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions and perform physically demanding work, including climbing, bending, stooping, lifting, and walking behind or operating equipment on varied terrain for extended periods.

Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Wear safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.

Position/Schedule Requirements Evening work occasionally, night work occasionally, overtime occasionally, valid NC driver’s license, weekend work occasionally.
