The Group Exercise Instructor reports to the Group Exercise/Wellness Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director.
The instructor is an exceptional motivator and excels at building relationships in our member‑centered environment.
They deliver multiple, high‑quality fitness programs that meet community needs, including but not limited to Les Mills, Cycling, Step, Body Sculpting, Zumba, Yoga, and Water Exercise classes.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Instruct members in maintaining beneficial exertion levels.
Monitor member progress and adapt programs as needed.
Observe and provide corrective feedback to improve skill levels.
Evaluate individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and design suitable training plans.
Offer variations of routines to accommodate all fitness levels.
Provide safe direction for potentially dangerous or harmful exercises.
Collect and respond to participant feedback, supporting goal‑oriented healthy living.
Maintain accurate attendance records.
Adhere to Association policies and procedures and operate within established guidelines.
Maintain and clean equipment per schedule or supervisor request.
Design and lead special programs, including planning, coordinating, presenting, or promoting events.
Explain and enforce safety rules for sports, recreational activities, and exercise equipment use.
Cover own classes when unavailable to attend.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Group Exercise Coordinator and/or Wellness Director.
Follow YMCA policies regarding safety, health, and welfare of all members, participants, guests, and staff; respond to emergencies in accordance with facility policies and certification requirements.
Attend required meetings and trainings.
Support the YMCA mission during annual giving events.
Water exercise classes must be taught from the pool deck.
Safety and Risk Management
Adhere to federal, state, local safety regulations and YMCA safety policies.
Ensure Tampa YMCA standards, leading practices, and policies are implemented consistently, including emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and appropriate supervision.
Follow procedures for managing high‑risk activities and supervising participants and boundaries.
Maintain training records for risk management, child abuse prevention, and incident reporting.
Conduct daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies.
Keep proper certifications and training records current.
Maintain safety emphasis in all responsibilities involving members and staff.
Ensure front‑desk personnel properly sign in/out guests and allow only authorized adults into the facility.
Create a safe, positive, and respectful environment for all.
Promptly report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior and policy violations.
Position Requirements
At least 18 years of age.
National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, Les Mills, Zumba) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
Yoga instructors must have a current yoga‑specific certification (200+ hrs).
Water exercise instructors must hold a current water instructor certification.
At least one year of experience instructing group exercise classes (preferred).
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to build positive, authentic relationships with diverse groups and individuals.
Well-organized and prepared to teach classes.
Represent the YMCA positively.
Certifications/Trainings Required
Obtain and maintain current community CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 30 days of employment.
Maintain position‑specific certifications as outlined in the training matrix.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Ability to plan, lead, and participate in classes and activities.
Ability to verbally and physically communicate program content.
Ability to hear participant discussion and questions.
Perform all physical aspects: leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, teaching from the pool deck, and lifting.
Lift or move a minimum of 50 pounds.
Stand for extended periods, adapt to changing circumstances.
Maintain close, distance, peripheral, depth vision, and focus adjustment.
Work in environments with extreme humidity, dampness, heat, or cold.
Work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Wear appropriate fitness attire and footwear; clothing must not be revealing or unprofessional.
