Distinguishing Features The Land Use Ordinance Officer performs field and office work reviewing and processing submitted requests and inquiries. The position has authority to issue notices of violation, discontinue ordinance offenses, and remove conditions that violate community ordinances.

Essential Functions

Administer documentation requests for issuing sign, native plant relocation, and right‑of‑entry permits while enforcing ordinance requirements.

Conduct native plant field review, prepare final field assessment report, and provide comments or recommendations.

Inspect signs requiring a sign permit and enforce Community ordinance compliance.

Provide technical assistance to individuals, community members, and other Tribal departments on land use issues and make recommendations.

Patrol the Community to gather data relating to ordinance violations; issue notices if warranted.

Respond to ordinance‑related questions from the public, provide information on regulations, and refer to appropriate Tribal departments.

Present various requests or inquiries before committees or boards (e.g., Natural Resource Standing Committee, Cultural Resource Standing Committee, Planning and Zoning).

Develop and maintain files, records, and spreadsheet logs of all requests and inquiries.

Assist in preparing, revising, and updating LUPZ Ordinance Section procedural guidelines.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skill & Ability

Considerable knowledge of Gila River Indian Community ordinances related to sign, native plant, right‑of‑entry.

Knowledge of legal descriptions of real estate property, construction plans, plot plans, and specifications.

Knowledge of geographic, geological and demographic characteristics of the Community.

Some knowledge of Land Use Planning and Zoning principles and practices.

Some knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to identify problems and offer solutions and recommendations.

Ability to analyze and compile moderately technical information.

Ability to prepare required records and reports and present facts clearly.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, Tribal departments, officials, and the public.

Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agreement to maintain a drug‑free workplace.

Required Experience and Training High school diploma or GED and at least one (1) year of experience in land use planning or a closely related field. Preference for college level courses in construction inspection, code enforcement, engineering, city planning, and human relations.

Additional Requirements

Pass a background check.

Must be commissioned by the Law Commission throughout employment.

Obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Must have a valid state driver’s license and a proof of driving record for the past 39 months submitted with the application; record must not be more than 60 days old.
