What To Expect
We're looking for a skilled engineer to design advanced battery cells—essential components in every Tesla product—that will enable affordable, accessible, and long‑lasting electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Tesla’s vertical integration offers a unique opportunity: you’ll develop architectures from concept to implementation, contribute to product roadmap decisions across our portfolio, and address technical manufacturing challenges at scale beyond typical automotive volumes.
In this role, you’ll apply first‑principles thinking to battery cell design and advance battery technology through innovative approaches. You’ll coordinate with multiple disciplines—including supply chain, electrochemistry design, manufacturing, and quality engineering—to develop prismatic cell products. Your responsibilities include establishing and validating requirements while guiding designs through to mass production.
We value technical excellence and a commitment to pushing boundaries in a fast‑paced environment where priorities evolve. Success in this position requires self‑motivation, disciplined execution, strong collaboration, and effective communication skills. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and able to define new directions with a problem‑solving mindset.
You’ll work alongside experienced industry professionals, talented recent graduates, and have access to domain experts across Tesla’s departments. We take pride in building a team focused on ownership, empathy, truth‑seeking, continuous learning, and mission‑driven work.
What You’ll Do
Design ownership of mechanical components and assemblies for in‑house cells, from initial concept through development and eventual factory launch + ramp
Advance and execute validation of technologies that enable key product performance metrics while meeting safety, cost, and mass production manufacturability
Lead prototyping, empirical testing and analysis (support advanced testing and analysis)
Hands‑on engagement with manufacturing process and automation development
Lead multi‑disciplinary collaborations across electrochemistry design, CAE, supply chain, quality, manufacturing, qualification, new product introduction
Research and benchmark competitive solutions; complete DFMEA and fault tree analysis
Define and release technical specifications (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing)
Author clear technical documentation & deliver live presentations
Participate in component sourcing and supplier engineering relationships
Occasional travel to Tesla factories, satellite team sites, and suppliers (domestic / international as needed)
What You’ll Bring
Degree or Equivalent Experience in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science
Robust fundamentals in solid mechanics, electrochemistry, and heat transfer
Experience designing for high‑volume manufacturing processes such as stamping, deep drawing, plastic injection molding, heat treating, and metal welding
Familiarity with properties and applications of common engineering metals and polymers
Experience with experiment design and setup, data acquisition, analysis
Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (CATIA V5/V6 experience is a plus)
Foundational knowledge in GD&T (proficiency is a plus)
Great communication skills (interpersonal & technical); willingness to lead discussions with internal & external groups; a team‑first attitude
Resilience & independent learning—ability to hit deadlines under pressure and manage shifting requirements, multiple simultaneous priorities
Proficiency with structural / thermal FEA and hands‑on fabrication skills
Benefits
Aetna PPO and HSA plans—2 medical plan options with $0 payroll deduction
Family‑building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits
Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution
Company Paid (Health Savings Account) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High Deductible Aetna medical plan with HSA
Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits
Company paid Basic Life, AD&D, short‑term and long‑term disability insurance
Employee Assistance Program
Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions), and Paid Holidays
Back‑up childcare and parenting support resources
Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance
Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs
Tesla Babies program
Commuter benefits
Employee discounts and perks program
Expected Compensation $92,720 - $206,520/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
