What to Expect Tesla is looking for a skilled Product Design Engineer to unlock the next level of affordability, safety, and longevity in a new generation of Li‑ion battery cell. This is a unique opportunity to develop, validate, and launch our cell into Tesla’s industry‑leading products.

In this role, you’ll apply a first‑principles approach to harness the building blocks of physics, chemistry, and engineering to drive the design process. You’ll collaborate with multiple teams including materials, manufacturing, supply chain, quality engineering, and external suppliers to prepare the design for mass production.

What You’ll Do

Holistic design ownership of mechanical components & cell assemblies of Li‑ion cell, including spec validation

Responsible for in‑lab testing and design analysis to ensure components & assemblies will meet all cell requirements

Conduct DFMEAs to proactively identify areas of risk, as well as lead rapid root‑cause analyses in response to new risks

Define technical part specifications (dimensional, functional, performance, process capability requirements), author documentation and releases, and deliver technical presentations

Lead design for manufacturing (DFM) for component sourcing with both external suppliers and internal partners

Drive multi‑disciplinary collaborations across teams including electrochemistry, CAE, supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and qualification

Occasional travel to Tesla factories, satellite team sites, and suppliers (domestic / international as needed)

Research and benchmark competitive solutions

What You’ll Bring

Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent experience

Robust fundamentals in solid mechanics, electrochemistry, and heat transfer

Experience designing for high‑volume manufacturing processes such as stamping, deep drawing, plastic injection molding, heat treating, and metal welding

Familiarity with properties and applications of common engineering metals and polymers

Experience with experiment design and setup, data acquisition, analysis

Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (CATIA V5/V6 experience is a plus)

Foundational knowledge in building tolerance stack analyses and GD&T

Great communication skills (interpersonal & technical); willingness to lead discussions with internal & external groups; a team‑first attitude

Resilience & independent learning—ability to hit deadlines under pressure and manage shifting requirements, multiple simultaneous priorities

Proficiency with structural / thermal FEA and hands‑on fabrication skills

Expected Compensation $92,720 - $206,520/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits.

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
