Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator II operates various types of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, water trucks, motor graders, and truck tractors, for the repair, maintenance, and construction of roads and trails on the Yakama Reservation. The role combines equipment operation with routine preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks as required.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment for road maintenance, grading, and construction projects.
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs on assigned equipment.
- Assist with snow removal, traffic control, and other transportation support tasks.
- Communicate effectively with the Transportation Superintendent, Supervisor, and Lead on project status and issues.
- Provide on-the‑job training to subordinates when required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as water trucks, dozers, loaders, road graders, belly dumps, 18‑wheel tractors, linear crushers, excavators, sweeping machines, snow plows.
- Understand standard maintenance requirements for heavy machinery.
- Familiarity with the Yakama Reservation road network.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and safety practices related to heavy equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Perform a wide variety of tasks for extended periods in varied weather conditions.
- Work independently and productively.
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience operating heavy equipment.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License with a Class A CDL or ability to obtain within probationary period.
- Ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Tribal Driver’s Permit.
- Physical condition to perform assigned duties.
- Effective audio and visual discrimination and perception.
- Availability for flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants encouraged to apply.
Preferred Requirements
- Vocational, Technical, or OJT certification in heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
