Job Description

Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Department: Operations

Division: 7

Report to: Road Maintenance Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Location: Multiple

Note: Candidates selected for positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation may be required to complete a pre-employment background check and drug screening before beginning employment. Some positions may also require applicants to participate in a Physical Abilities Demonstration and be rated as capable of performing the essential functions of this job family.

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Typical Functions

  • Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
  • Applies herbicide to highway rights-of-way to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Removes debris including tires, animal carcass, spilled items and other obstacles.

Level Descriptor

Level I: The basic level with supervision, operating and maintaining power equipment and performing related unskilled tasks in highway construction, maintenance and repair.

Level II: The career level with skilled work at full performance level in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or repair and related maintenance duties.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies

Level I: Knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery; ability to perform manual labor, maintain and operate power equipment, and follow instructions.

Level II: Knowledge of operation and servicing of equipment used in highway construction and maintenance; materials used; and proper highway traffic control during maintenance operations. Ability to operate heavy equipment, use materials, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.

Education and Experience

Level I: Education and experience requirements at this level are none.

Level II: One year of experience in operating heavy equipment.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment. Some agencies may require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver's license (Class A or B) with endorsements. CDL tank vehicle endorsement may be required. Applicants must take and pass a drug test prior to appointment. Such tests will be administered through the appointing agency. Applicants must be willing to perform job-related travel and to work hours other than regular shifts during emergencies. Physical requirements include standing, walking, reaching, sitting, manipulating objects, climbing, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements may apply.
