Overview The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist will lead and provide technical expertise in safety, health, and environmental programs at Boulder Scientific Company. The role includes handling hazardous waste, performing waste characterization, processing, and disposal, and working closely with Health & Safety Specialists and Environmental Technicians to reduce safety and health issues, manage warehouse inventory, maintenance, and cleanup activities, and foster a safety culture.
Responsibilities
Learns how to provide effective Health and Safety Training for new hire orientation and periodic refresher courses
Conducts ergonomic risk assessments in the new Velocity EHS platform
Participates in updating standard operating procedures and reviews
Uses and maintains atmospheric testing equipment, including maintenance and calibrations
Knowledgeable in the maintenance and calibration of supplied air monitoring equipment
Provides input and suggestions into LOTO/CSE/Hot Work programs
Ensures Health and Safety Training content is up to date, accurate, and consistent with business needs
Learns plant processes to effectively characterize and manage process wastes
Participates in incident investigations and facilitates identification of causal factors and corrective actions
Assists in conducting IH sampling and facilitates third‑party IH monitoring
Reviews, updates, and maintains OSHA logs
Organizes and reviews data for entry into Velocity EHS data management software; primary administrator of the software
Compiles EHS data and analyzes trends
Ensures security and confidentiality of EHS documents and data
Manages MSDS/SDS program for materials used, received, and/or processed at the facility
Manages chemical and noise exposure monitoring programs
Participates in the Employee Safety Committee
Conducts safety and health audits and assists in closure of action items
Helps develop and implement emergency response procedures
Labels hazardous waste containers in compliance with labeling regulations
Conducts daily environmental inspections to ensure facility compliance with permits and regulations
Performs and documents inspections related to RCRA, CAA, LDAR, Stormwater, and SPCC programs
Maintains inventory of environmental and H&S supplies
Collects environmental samples across media (soil, water, air) to support monitoring programs
Has general chemistry background and completes RCRA and DOT training for waste determinations
Develops inspection checklists for EHS data management software
Uses batch records to identify waste streams and maintain a database of waste streams for disposal
Collaborates with process chemist, engineers, and production to gather data for waste characterization
Reviews batch records to update waste characterizations
Familiar with MS Excel & Word and waste vendor portals
Reads and interprets analytical sample results
Drives between BSC sites in own vehicle
Must pass a job‑related physical
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
College‑level coursework in Environmental Science
Must be at least 18 years old
Experience
Basic computer experience (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Chemical manufacturing experience is a plus
Work Environment Work may involve fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, indoor and outdoor Colorado weather. Frequently lift/move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Work includes walking, driving, and use of PPE in laboratories, manufacturing areas, and storage facilities. Noise level is usually quiet.
