Responsibilities The Environmental Scientist will:

Serve as a key member of the Division of Environmental Planning and Engineering at Caltrans District 5.

Lead environmental teams on project development for transportation projects in the San Luis Obispo area.

Plan and execute complex environmental studies required to facilitate project delivery.

Gather, research, and analyze social, natural, and environmental data.

Prepare, review, and process environmental documents to comply with federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Collaborate with a Senior Environmental Planner and other project teams.

Travel, stay overnight, and work occasional overtime as needed.

Operate state‑owned or leased vehicles with a valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements

Valid driver’s license is required for operating state vehicles.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.

Eligibility All appointment methods are considered (list appointment, transfer, reinstatement, surplus, etc.). Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the classification. Eligibility may be determined by the Environmental Scientist exam score. New to state civil service candidates must be on the state exam list.
