Overview
Long Beach Unified School District is recruiting a Student Transportation Van Driver for Catalina Island, focusing on transporting students to the Avalon School and field trips.
Pay Base pay range: $4.22/hr – $4.23/hr. Catalina Island Unit A & B employees receive an additional $4.2247/hr.
Responsibilities
Pick up and drop off students according to schedules; ensure seat belts worn.
Maintain order and discipline; prepare conduct reports as needed.
Transport students, staff, and parents on field trips, events, and other destinations, meeting departure/arrival times; load/unload supplies and lunch containers.
Perform daily vehicle inspections; report mechanical issues; drive vehicles to mechanics; pick up school mail.
Maintain vehicle cleanliness; check fluid levels; refuel; prepare for operation.
Maintain accurate records of vehicle condition, inspections, and repairs.
Respond to emergencies per guidelines; administer first aid; prepare accident reports.
Attend safety meetings to stay current on procedures.
Utilize two‑way radio; monitor road/traffic conditions.
Assist with receptionist and routine clerical duties as assigned.
Assist with custodial duties: deep cleaning, setting up classrooms, and general school maintenance.
Assist with grounds and gardening maintenance using supplied equipment.
Communicate with administrators, staff, and parents to coordinate activities, resolve issues, and exchange information.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
Safe and defensive driving practices.
Applicable traffic and student transportation laws and regulations.
First aid procedures.
Operation of a two‑way radio.
Telephone etiquette techniques.
Basic vehicle maintenance requirements.
Basic record‑keeping and report preparation.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Oral and written communication skills.
Abilities
Drive a nine‑passenger van safely and efficiently along a designated route.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Maintain vehicle in a clean and working condition.
Maintain a safe discipline level among students.
Conduct required safety inspections.
Administer first aid.
Learn and assist in clerical and custodial duties.
Learn and assist in grounds maintenance and gardening equipment use.
Maintain routine records and reports.
Determine appropriate action within guidelines.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Observe health and safety regulations set by the State Education Code and District.
Work independently with little direction.
Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
Meet schedules and timelines.
Operate a two‑way radio.
Read and interpret maps.
Education & Experience High school graduate or equivalent is desirable.
Two years of experience operating a motor vehicle; experience driving a passenger van or bus is highly desirable.
Valid California Class C driver’s license.
Additional Requirements
Must obtain and submit a current motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment; record must meet district’s safe driving standard.
Must possess a valid First Aid Certificate and CPR Card issued by an authorized agency at the time of appointment; must maintain certification throughout employment.
Applicants will be required to provide a motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment; failure to meet this requirement will result in disqualification.
Selection Procedure The examination process may include screening of training, background, and experience; supplemental application responses; written examinations; oral qualifications; performance examinations; or technical oral examinations, scored on a job‑related basis. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue.
