At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician operating at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II position provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintains medical records. This role communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence in care, technology use, medication administration, procedures, and emergency management while advocating for patients and families. Leadership responsibilities include serving as charge nurse, preceptor, and participating in unit and shared governance initiatives, as well as contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Uses therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team.
Collaborates to foster healthy relationships and offers guidance to the interprofessional team, applying feedback to improve patient outcomes.
Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors staff and students, including preceptorship.
Supports peer-to-peer accountability to improve department scores for turnover, retention, and employee engagement on the unit-based scorecard.
Service Essential Functions
Follows patient- and family-centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
Develops, updates, and communicates the plan of care, including discharge, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
Provides patient teaching based on learning needs, evaluating comprehension, and adapting teaching methods accordingly.
Helps drive improvement of department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Follows nursing process standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
Identifies practice improvement areas using evidence-based research to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes.
Coordinates complex patient care with the interprofessional team, employing evidence-based clinical judgment.
Improves quality and safety scores on the unit-based scorecard through peer-to-peer accountability and collaboration with the interprofessional health care team.
Finance Essential Functions
Manages time and documentation effectively, minimizing incidental overtime and prioritizing daily tasks.
Contributes to meeting department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing unit efficiency.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement using evidence-based practice literature.
Champions new care pathways or service line implementation to improve service to the community.
Researches changes and presents options to shared governance and leadership.
Education and Licensing
Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) (RN).
Minimum of twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
Texas State RN license (Compact Licensure) obtained within 60 days of establishing residency.
BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) certification.
NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) within 4 months.
Preferred: Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates competencies necessary for safe performance of the job through ongoing assessments.
Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
Effective communicator with patients, physicians, and co‑workers, using positive language and customer service focus.
Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills; prioritizes multiple tasks.
Independent judgment in interactions with the interprofessional team.
Proficient time‑management and Microsoft Outlook skills.
Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
Supplemental Requirements
On-call may be required during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather) regardless of selection below.
Travel within the Houston Metropolitan area only.
