The Nursing Director (DON) provides surgical leadership and administrative oversight for all nursing and patient care services within the ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This crucial role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, promotes excellence in patient outcomes, and supports the mission of delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate ophthalmic surgical care. Key Responsibilities: Lead all preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative nursing functions for ophthalmic surgical procedures. Act as a liaison between physicians, anesthesia, and clinical teams to promote open communication and coordinated care. Participate in ASC leadership meetings, providing updates on quality metrics, staffing, and compliance initiatives. Ensure adherence to evidence-based surgical protocols, infection prevention standards, and sterile processing requirements. Maintain readiness for regulatory surveys (e.g., CMS, OSHA, State, etc.). Develop, review, and update policies, procedures, and competencies specific to ophthalmology. Staff Management: Recruit, train, and evaluate nursing and ancillary staff, including RNs, surgical techs, and surgical medical assistants. Create staffing schedules that enhance patient safety, efficiency, and productivity. Conduct performance evaluations and implement development plans to promote staff engagement and retention. Foster a positive, team-oriented culture that aligns with organizational values and patient-centered care. Quality & Compliance: Oversee infection control, medication management, and safety initiatives. Lead QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement) programs, ensuring thorough documentation and follow-up on corrective actions. Monitor patient satisfaction, surgical outcomes, and surgical indicators to identify trends and implement improvement initiatives. Collaborate with the Compliance Officer, Medical Director, and ASC VP of Operations to ensure full regulatory and legal compliance. Lead emergency preparedness training and safety drills in accordance with state, CMS, and OSHA standards. Operational & Financial Management: Partner with the ASC Vice President to develop and manage the budget, supply inventory, and equipment maintenance. Optimize surgical workflows and turnover times to enhance case volume and operational efficiency. Support capital planning and vendor relationships for surgical instruments, microscopes, and other ophthalmic equipment. Experience & Education Requirements: Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role within an ASC, hospital outpatient, or ophthalmology surgical setting. Ophthalmology experience preferred. Strong understanding of surgical procedures, sterile technique, and regulatory compliance. Prior experience with AAAHC or Joint Commission accreditation preferred. Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication abilities. Ability to mentor and motivate staff in a fast-paced environment. Physical Demands: Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
