Position Summary: We are excited to announce an innovative, school-based social work internship and mentoring initiative that is a collaboration between EMU's School of Social Work and Ypsilanti Community Schools, supporting students at Ypsilanti Community Schools. This program is designed to deliver both universal social-emotional learning (SEL) support and targeted interventions, while providing hands-on experience for undergraduate and graduate-level social work interns and professional oversight through a dedicated Program Coordinator. Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in social work required, Master's Degree preferred. Experience or interest in school-based work, SEL, youth mentoring, and equity-centered practices. Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive service. Proficient in oral and written communication. Responsibilities:
Coordinator/Liaison:
Primary contact for program director (EMU faculty), school administration, teachers, and school social worker. Supervision:
Provides weekly support to social work student interns. Curriculum:
Oversees universal SEL curriculum delivery and provides resources for 1:1 mentoring activities. Student Matching:
Manages the 1:1 mentor-mentee matching process and makes ongoing adjustments as needed Reporting:
Handles reporting and program evaluation. Family Engagement:
Coordinates communication and engagement with families of both the 5th graders (newsletter) and especially the 1:1 mentees, direct reach out to support the mentor/mentee match relationship Presence:
The coordinator would be present during key in-school support times and all after-school sessions. Universal SEL Support:
Work with student interns on co-facilitating SEL curriculum-based lessons in 5th-grade classrooms alongside the school social worker. Small Group Facilitation:
Support student interns in leading targeted SEL groups (4-6 students) on topics such as emotional regulation, friendship building, and conflict resolution. Individual Check-ins:
Conduct brief check-ins with identified students and families to support day-to-day well-being and school success After-School & Community Engagement:
Participate in organizing and supervising after-school sessions (e.g., 4:30 PM-6:30 PM) and plan monthly community-based outings to deepen mentorship impact. Collaboration & Documentation:
Participate in weekly group supervision, collaborate with school staff and peers, document interventions, and contribute to ongoing planning. Other duties are assigned.
